It sits there, at every intersection, over every street drain. You may walk across it a dozen times a day and never really look at it. Its name is straightforward: the Gully Grating.

What it does is more than just draining

Most assume the grating does one thing: let water through. In fact, its responsibilities run much deeper:

• The basic function is to quickly collect rainwater to prevent flooding.
• Blocks leaves, litter, and gravel from entering underground pipes and causing blockages.
• Load-bearing. Pedestrians, bicycles, cars, trucks, even aircraft – gratings in different locations bear entirely different weights.
• Anti-slip patterns keep pedestrians from slipping in the rain; proper bar spacing prevents high heels or bicycle tires from getting caught.

How SOLID makes its gratings

Material: Ductile iron remains the first choice.

There are cast iron gratings, steel gratings, and composite gratings on the market. SOLID sticks with ductile iron for one simple reason: it offers both strength and toughness. It withstands repeated heavy vehicle loads without brittle fracture. It resists corrosion in humid and salt-laden environments. And it lasts decades under normal use.

Design: Three numbers determine quality.

The first number is the load rating. SOLID strictly classifies products according to EN 124 – from A15 (sidewalks) to F900 (airport runways). Each grade corresponds to a clear test load. We do not overstate capabilities. We label exactly what we deliver.

The second number is the bar spacing. Too wide – high heels get caught, bicycle wheels wedge in. Too narrow – water drains slowly, and debris clogs easily. SOLID's gratings are designed with a balanced trade-off between passability and drainage capacity – safe and efficient at the same time.

The third number is the anti-slip coefficient. The surface pattern is not decorative. SOLID uses specially designed anti-slip casting patterns, ensuring pedestrians don't slip even on a rain-soaked night.

Anti-corrosion: Shot blasting first, then coating

Gratings are exposed to the elements year-round – rain, de-icing salts, vehicle oils, and UV rays - each taking its toll. Every SOLID grating is shot-blasted to remove surface scale, then coated with bitumen or epoxy. This treatment extends service life by a decade or more.

Applications: From residential communities to ports – same product, different requirements

The scenarios SOLID covers are broader than many imagine:

• Residential communities and pedestrian streets– A15 or B125, balancing appearance with functionality.
• Urban roads and parking lots– C250 or D400, handling regular traffic with ease.
• Ports and logistics parks– E600, for areas with heavy container truck traffic.
• Airport aprons and runways– F900, the world's highest load standard, is directly linked to flight safety.

Same name, different specifications. SOLID recommends the appropriate grade and size based on the customer's actual application – neither over-engineered to waste cost, nor under-specified to create hidden risks.
